The Niskayuna 9U All-Star Team captured the Eastern New York Cal Ripken State Tournament title Tuesday in Poughkeepsie.
After beating East Fishkill (16-6), Rome (12-9), Highland (10-3) and Clifton Park (9-2) in round-robin play, Niskayuna advanced beat North Colonie 8-7 in the semifinals, coming back from a 7-2 deficit.
Niskayuna faced East Fishkill in the title game. East Fishkill took a 1-0 lead in the first. Niskayuna rallied in the fifth. Jackson Horner tripled, and Dillon Wood was hit by a pitch. Starting pitcher Matthew Hand tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Braden Fields then drove in the go-ahead run with a fielder’s choice. Cam Grasso hit a two-run homer to make it 4-1. Grasso pitched the final two innings to get the win.
This is the first state championship for a Niskayuna Cal Ripken team at any level since the 9U team hosted and won in 2014. The Warriors now advance to Douglassville, Pa., for the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament beginning next Thursday.
