REXFORD — Ready, set, go! Glencliff Elementary School hosted its annual Fun Run and Ice Cream Social to benefit the Cathy Hartlage Memorial Scholarship.

Students of all ages laced up their running shoes and set off around the property, running a quarter-mile course. After the race, parents and students piled into the cafeteria for a celebratory build-your-own ice cream sundae.

The scholarship is in memory of Rosendale and Glencliff third-grade teacher Cathy Hartlage who passed away in 2014 following a battle with cancer.

She is described in a news release “a true professional who loved all aspects of her craft, from working collaboratively with her teammates on curriculum and planning to help every student in her class grow to their highest potential. Cathy always saw the best in us all.”

Part of her legacy is a scholarship awarded annually to a Niskayuna High School senior who plans to pursue teaching.

The Crabtree family participated in the fun run. Jennifer and Andy used the opportunity to talk with their three children about helping others and giving to a good cause — even in the name of someone they didn’t know.

After the run, administrators and PTO members scooped chocolate, vanilla, swirl and other flavors of ice cream before the students topped their bowls with whipped cream, sprinkles, cherries and syrups.

The 2017 Cathy Hartlage Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Madeline Trombley.
