NISKAYUNA- The Niska Turkey, the turkey so famous it now has a Twitter handle (@NiskaTurkey7) will no longer be roaming the bustling streets of Route 7 or Balltown Road.
The turkey was captured on Tuesday evening by the Niskayuna police department and by officials of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
According to the police department, Niska Turkey became too practiced in its favorite hobby of holding up traffic.
“Last night, she decided she didn’t want to get out of the road. People began to get out of their cars and try to help her across,” said Deputy Chief Michael Stevens.
This was a danger to pedestrians so the Niskayuna police department called in officers from the DEC.
Officers Bush and Canzeri were able to capture the turkey and have brought her to North Country Wild Care, a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting animals like the Niska Turkey.
“One of the concerns was about the wing,” Stevens said. Some residents thought that her wing might have been injured or broken.
“They will make sure her wing is okay,” Stevens said of North Country.
Once that is taken care of, she can be released into another location (most likely far away from traffic).
As of Wednesday afternoon, Your Niskayuna is waiting for an update on Niska Turkey’s health.
