NISKAYUNA — Liam G. Mc-Grinder, a Niskayuna High School senior, has been named a candidate for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.
McGrinder is one of more than 4,000 candidates selected from nearly 3.3 million students expected to graduate from high school nationwide this year.
Inclusion in the Presidential Scholars program is one of the highest honors for graduating seniors.
The scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic or artistic achievement, leadership qualities, strong character, and involvement in community and school activities.
A panel of educators will review these submissions and select 800 semifinalists in early April.
A separate group of 32 eminent citizens appointed by the president will select the finalists, and the U.S. Department of Education will announce the scholars in May.
Scholars are then invited to Washington, D.C., for several days in June to receive the Presidential Scholars Medallion.
McGrinder is the son of Gerard and Paddi McGrinder.
