10 games to watch this winter season in Niskayuna athletics

NISKAYUNA — There’s no rest for the weary.

While the high school fall sports season in Niskayuna wrapped up Nov. 21-22 with the girls’ swimming team at its state championships, the Niskayuna athletics’ winter teams long have been at work getting ready for their 2015-16 seasons.

Winter sports practices started Nov. 9, leaving the start of games, matches, and meets right around the corner.

Here are 10 of the most-anticipated sporting events this winter season for the Silver Warriors, as presently scheduled:

GETTING ROLLING

Who: Niskayuna bowling

When: Dec. 1, 4:15 p.m.

Where: Boulevard Bowl

What: In their opener, the Niskayuna boys’ and girls’ teams will take on Ballston Spa.

DEBUT EFFORT

Who: Niskayuna boys’ swimming

When: Dec. 1, 4:30 p.m.

Where: Niskayuna High School

What: In a meet against Shenendehowa, the Silver Warriors will experience their first competition of the season with new head coach Molly Chamberlain.

LOCAL RIVALS

Who: Niskayuna wrestling

When: Dec. 9, 7:30 p.m.

Where: Schenectady High School

What: In an early-season meeting against new league foe Schenectady, the Silver Warriors will look to get the winter campaign off to a strong start for Niskayuna against the nearby competitor.

CHANCE FOR REVENGE

Who: Niskayuna girls’ basketball

When: Dec. 15, 7 p.m.

Where: Niskayuna High School

What: Last season ended for head coach Sarah Neely’s squad against Colonie, and this game against the Garnet Raiders will represent the one regular season meeting between the two schools this winter.

HOLIDAY HOCKEY

Who: Niskayuna/Schenectady hockey

When: Dec. 26-27, TBA

Where: Union College

What: The two-day tournament acts as the Mohawks’ final tuneup before the league season gets fully underway after the start of 2016.

SKI TIME

Who: Niskayuna Alpine ski

When: Jan. 13, 5 p.m.

Where: West Mountain

What: The Alpine ski season is always a tough one to pinpoint a start date, but this day’s invitational should present the Silver Warriors a chance to measure themselves against some of the best in the area.

A NEW/OLD FOE

Who: Niskayuna boys’ basketball

When: Jan. 22, 7 p.m.

Where: Niskayuna High School

What: The Silver Warriors will meet CBA in the teams’ first-ever Suburban Council matchup. Besides that, the game is a rematch of last year’s season-ender for Niskayuna and will be senior Andrew Evans’ first game against his old CBA teammates.

TITLES UP FOR GRABS

Who: Niskayuna indoor track and field

When: Jan. 31, 8 a.m.

Where: University at Albany

What: All the squads in the Suburban Council will get together for an all-day event for both boys and girls to crown league champions.

SUBURBAN CHEER

Who: Niskayuna cheer

When: Feb. 6, 9 a.m.

Where: Mohonasen High School

What: For the competition season for the Niskayuna cheer team, few events will be more competitive than the Suburban Council’s championships.

REMATCH OF AN EPIC

Who: Niskayuna/Schenectady hockey

When: Feb. 12, 8 p.m.

Where: Clifton Park Ice Arena

What: The last time the Mohawks played Shenendehowa was in a triple-overtime postseason classic, which the Plainsmen won 5-4.
