NISKAYUNA — Two water main breaks in Niskayuna within an hour of one another disrupted water service and traffic in town on Thursday afternoon.
The first was a break in a large pipe near Rosendale Elementary School. The second occurred in a 12-inch main near Iroquois Middle School, which is nearby.
“We’re thinking the second one was caused by the first one,” Town Supervisor Joe Landry said.
Repair crews were working on the problem before 3 p.m., but Landry said he couldn’t yet predict when the break would be repaired.
According to a press release from the Niskayuna Central School District, Rosendale, Birchwood and Iroquois schools were affected by the break, and some end-of-day transportation was impacted. Students at the schools had access to bottled water.
In the meantime, Schenectady County has issued a boil water advisory for the Town of Niskayuna. Residents are also asked to conserve water, although water pressure will likely resume soon. Rosendale Road remains closed between River and Mohawk Roads.
Landry said the town and county were in the process of notifying residents of the water main break and ensuing boil water advisory using robo-calls at about 4 p.m. on Thursday.
