NISKAYUNA — A Niskayuna man was hospitalized Monday when his bicycle underwent a mechanical failure and caused him to veer into traffic, town police said.
Gregory Cleveland, 46, was riding east in the curb lane of Troy-Schenectady Road approaching Mohawk Road at about 5:30 p.m. when a vehicle heading in the same direction and lane tried to pass him, police said. A mechanical failure of the bike caused Cleveland to veer in front of the passing vehicle and be hit, police said.
Cleveland ended up in the roadway suffering serious personal injury, police said. He was treated at the scene by members of Niskayuna Fire District 2 and taken by ambulance to Albany Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition.
One lane of traffic heading east was closed for three hours as officers reconstructed the scene, police said.
Alcohol was not a contributing factor to the crash, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
