Four years ago, a pair of local girls took part in the Under Armour Underclass Lacrosse Tournament. The Upstate New York roster for next month’s showcase event at Towson University in Maryland will have five times that many.
“The Capital Region has grown the last few years, and people are noticing,” said Jake McHerron, an assistant coach for the Upstate New York team. “The representation shows the type of kids that are in our area, and what we have been putting into our youth, recreation and high school programs.”
More than 100 girls from all parts of the state, with the exception of Long Island, assembled at Albany Academy for a one-day tryout. Three girls from Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School, including US Lacrosse All-American goalkeeper Lexie Ball, three from Section II Class B champion Niskayuna High School and four others with local ties were selected for the 24-player roster.
Five area players made the 2014 team, and six were chosen for the 2013 roster.
“We were looking for athletes. Girls who could make a difference, girls who could pass, catch and move the ball,” said McHerron. “We were looking for high lacrosse IQ, and girls who would fit into the team concept.”
