Niskayuna rock climber dies in fall at upstate nature preserve

GARDINER, N.Y. — State police say a Niskayuna man has died in a 50-foot fall while rock climbing in a nature preserve in New York’s Shawangunk  Mountains.

Troopers say 46-year-old Andrew Barnes of Niskayuna in Schenectady County was climbing in the Mohonk Preserve in the Ulster County town of Gardiner around 8:20 p.m. Wednesday when he fell about 50 feet.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers say Barnes was free climbing and wasn’t utilizing a climbing rope when he fell. Police say he had more than a decade of rock-climbing experience.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

The Mohonk Preserve is a nonprofit nature preserve located 70 miles south of Albany.
