NY canal system to open May 8

The New York State Canal System, weather permitting, is set to open for the season next month.

All portions of the canal system, including the Erie Canal, are scheduled to open to boaters at 7 a.m. Thursday, May 8, according to a notice to mariners.

The canal system will be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 8 through June 3; from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 4 through Sept. 9; and from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 10 through Nov. 18.

The canal system’s locks, including Lock 1 in Halfmoon and Lock 7 in Niskayuna, will operate on demand from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. from June 4 through Sept. 9.
