Jewish Film Festival

NISKAYUNA — The JCC of Schenectady’s 2014-15 Jewish Film Festival opens Saturday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m.

The first of eight featured films, which will be shown weekends through March, will be the award-winning 2014 Israeli drama “Fill the Void,” in Hebrew with English subtitles. Rabbi Eleanor Pearlman will lead a discussion.

Individual tickets cost $9, or $5 for members and $3 for students. The entire series of eight programs is $55, or $30 for members.

Holy Land flora

NISKAYUNA — Jo Ann Gardner, herb authority, plantswoman, author and lecturer, will present a PowerPoint presentation titled “Solomon’s Garden: Exploring the Biblical Roots of Holy Land Flora” at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at Congregation Agudat Achim, 2117 Union St.

The free program is open to the public. Gardner’s seventh book, “Seeds of Transcendence: Understanding the Hebrew Bible through Plants,” was recently published and will be for sale at the program. This lecture ties in with the congregation’s Biblical Garden project.

JCC Fall Festival

NISKAYUNA — The Schenectady JCC will hold its annual Fall Festival from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12.

The event will feature a kids’ and parents’ fun run at noon, with registration opening at 11:45 a.m., followed by face painting, a craft fair, pony rides, a petting zoo, and fall food and produce for sale.

Rotary meetings

SCHENECTADY — The Niskayuna Rotary meets from 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. at the Blue Ribbon Restaurant, 1801 State St. The public is invited. Upcoming meetings include:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 14, when the theme will be Building a Better Niskayuna.
         Topics will include Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, Boy Scout camperships, dictionaries for third-graders, awarding Paul Harris Fellowships, exchange students, international initiatives and a review of available funding.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 21, when Norma Westcott will be the featured guest speaker.
         The former teacher’s latest initiative, “Who Will Carry My Pocketbook,” addresses the need to have all of our important documents readily available in case of emergency.

Ellis health fair

SCHENECTADY — Ellis Health Center at 600 McClellan Street will host a community health fair, presented by the Community Wellness Cabinet, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11.

The event, which will be held in the Robb Auditorium, will offer flu shots, health education, asthma screening and blood pressure screening, all at no cost to participants. Also, several community agencies and health care providers will provide information to attendees.

Piano concert

NISKAYUNA — Pianist Pola Baytelman will play a concert celebrating the music of Jewish composers at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at the Schenectady JCC.

Tickets cost $13, or $9 for JCC members and $5 for students. Refreshments will be served.
