NISKAYUNA — Two Niskayuna Fire District 1 paramedics were responding to a call when a car collided with their ambulance the evening of Aug. 12.

“They were struck by another car,” said Fire Chief Dale Lingenfelter. “They had their lights and sirens on.”

The accident occurred around 8 p.m. at the corner of Balltown Road and Union Street, a short distance from the fire station.

The driver of the car was issued a ticket, Lingenfelter said.

The paramedics, Joe Congdon and Shannon Powers, were taken to a hospital for observation and released shortly afterward. Lingenfelter was unable to comment on the condition of the other driver.

“She was treated and transported by another one of our ambulances,” he said.

The ambulance is being evaluated for repairs, and the chief said he was unsure of its current condition.

Though it’s unusual for his fire district to deal with an ambulance accident, Lingenfelter said it’s a common problem in the profession.
