NISKAYUNA — At 6:15 a.m. July 17, a neighbor noticed a fire at 1350 Buckingham Drive and called 911.
The Stanford Heights Fire District took the call and responded along with five other departments — both Niskayuna districts, two Colonie departments, and the Carman Fire Department in Rotterdam. Two more were on standby.
No one was home at the time. The fire was under control in 45 minutes.
The large number of assisting departments were necessary because of the time of day, said John Courter, second assistant chief at Stanford Heights.
“A lot of guys were going to work, so we were short-staffed,” he said. Many of the firefighters who fought the blaze were volunteers — one of them was treated for heat exhaustion.
He said the damage was significant, but the family eventually will be able to return.
