A reported firearm sighting in River Road Park that caused lockouts at Rosendale Elementary and Iroquois Middle Schools turned out not to be a threat, according to Lieutenant Michael Stevens of the Niskayuna Police Department.
Stevens said the department received one call from a woman who had a distant vantage point and could not offer much description, but claimed to see three teenage males with what she thought was a rifle.
Because River Road Park’s trails lead directly to the two schools, Stevens said the schools were immediately notified and all available officers were dispatched to search the park. At first, they found nothing and were able to give schools the all-clear.
Later, Stevens said, the department received a phone call from a parent who had solved the mystery.
“A parent got the email and confronted his kid, and his son admitted it was him with some buddies, and that it was a BB gun,” Stevens said. “That’s all being investigated at this point.” No charges have been filed yet.
“We are confident that the schools are not in danger,” Stevens said. “They were shooting cans with it.”
