Niskayuna resident named Schenectady County’s 2014 Senior Citizen of the Year

The Schenectady County Legislature honored several local senior citizens for their community engagement at its June 10 meeting. The 2014 Senior Citizen of the Year, Jonetta “Skip” Darcy, is an active Niskayuna resident. According to a press release from the county:

“Ms. Darcy has spent her adult life in service to others, spending 27 years as a teacher in the Schenectady City School district. Upon her retirement Ms. Darcy volunteer as a tutor with Literacy Volunteers, at the Boys and Girls Club, through Elderhostel at the Honolulu Zoo, and in Navajo and Hopi elementary school libraries.

“Ms. Darcy currently serves on the Niskayuna Senior Advisory Committee, assists with the Niskayuna Senior Membership drive, volunteers with Friends of Schenectady County Library; and volunteers for the League of Women Voters attending and reporting on the activities of the Metroplex Development Authority and the Niskayuna Town Board.

“In her spare time Ms. Darcy is a Scottish Dance Instructor and Performer.”

Also honored at the ceremony were Mr. Sandy Heitkamp, “2014 Senior Citizen with an Outstanding Contribution,” and Ms. Elsie Harrington, “2014 Lifetime Achievement Award” winner.
