You’ll have to choose between these two free, outdoorsy events on Saturday morning:
Learn to Row Day
10 a.m. Saturday, June 7
Do you want to learn to row? Aqueduct Rowing Club will participate in National Learn To Row Day, Saturday, June 7, from 10-2. Interested rowers will have a tour of the boathouse, learn to use an ergometer, and try their hand at rowing. All activities will be held at the Aqueduct Boat House, located on the Mohawk River, at the corner of Balltown Road and Aqueduct Road at the Rexford Bridge.
ARC is also planning Adult Summer Learn to Row programs this summer. They will be held July 7-31 and August 4-28 at the Aqueduct Rowing Club Boathouse, Aqueduct Road and Balltown Road. The LTR sessions will run 5:30-7:30, Mondays and Wednesdays. Fees are $150 for the first session attended and $110 for the second if you are enrolled in the first session. To register, go to website, Aqueduct Rowing Club to download application and waiver.
Guided Nature Walk
10 a.m. Saturday, June 7
Join Forester Mary Spring and Cemetery Guy Rick Touchette on a walk through Most Holy Redeemer’s thirty-five acre forest harvested five years ago to achieve timber stand improvement and income. The harvest created a more open canopy to allow for vigorous growth of remaining trees and seedlings, with red oak among the favored species. See the results of these management efforts and learn what to do next. Certainly the challenges facing the current regeneration did not exist when the maturing forest began to develop one hundred years ago!
The property is formerly the residence of a botanist, and thus interesting plants abound! Can you help identify them?
The woods-walk will require about 1½ hours and covers fairly gentle terrain. There is no cost for this event but registration is appreciated. As always when in the woods, wear sturdy shoes, stay hydrated, and protect yourself against insect pests.
For further information or to register contact Rick at 518-463-0134 (weekdays). Go to: www.nyfoa.org to learn about other events across the state.
